By Sophie Cornish AN URGENT meeting with the Ministry of Education has been requested to discuss the future of several school sites across east Christchurch. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board want to hold the meeting before Christmas. Future use of the Burwood School site, a delay in the demolition of Aranui Primary School, discussions about the sale of Central New Brighton School, and the impact six school closures has had will be on the agenda. The community board will also request meetings be set up with community groups in response to the use of the Aranui and Central New Brighton school sites. Said Coastal-Burwood Ward city councillor Glenn Livingstone: “Given the significance of the loses – several schools – we’re saying, hey, we want your attention.” “Because this is big. Sculpture turning to dust
THERE APPEARS to be a bone of contention over whether the grass on an empty section in Avondale (see page 3) is a fire risk or not. Neighbour Maree Ross has been trying without success to get the undergrowth cut for sometime. She and a nearby kindergarten say it’s a fire risk. It is the section owner’s responsibility to cut the undergrowth. But that person can’t be traced. So Maree wants the city council to step in. It appears they won’t. They’ve told her the undergrowth isn’t a health risk in terms of rats, flies and other inhabitants. Fire risk doesn’t seem to be on their radar. And that’s puzzling given there’s a fire ban in place and the region is tinder dry. -Barry Clarke

News Clean this up – neighbour By Sophie Cornish AN AVONDALE woman fed up with living next door to an overgrown property has been told it isn’t the city council’s problem. Maree Ross has tried for more than 18 months to get some action on the mess which she believes is a fire risk, attracts flies and vermin and is affecting her physical and mental health. The property is next to Woolley St Kidsfirst kindergarten which is also concerned about the fire risk. Ms Ross was visited by a city council staff member on Thursday. He said the section is not a health nuisance. The section was not assessed for fire risk, a city council spokeswoman said yesterday. The city council was unable to contact the owner to clean up the property, Ms Ross said she was told. City council spokeswomen Claire Le Grice said the maintenance responsibilities for private property sit with the property owner, unless it poses a safety risk. “The council may issue a notice requiring an occupier to

trim or remove vegetation where it is likely to become a source of danger in the event of a fire; or it causes an obstruction by encroaching onto footpaths, cycleways or roads. The city council placed fire restrictions on the city on Saturday. “Long, dry grass can cause fires to spread quickly so it is important at this time of year that people keep any grass around their property trimmed,’’ said Richard Neale, compliance and investigations team leader. Ms Ross said the empty section was purchased after the earthquakes. Nothing has been done to maintain the site since. Ms Ross’ hay-fever has increased since living next to the overgrown garden.

In Brief ROCKABILLY UPDATE The future of Rockabilly Show and Shine in Rawhiti Domain may be decided today. Event organisers will be meeting with city council staff and members from the Christchurch Archery Club to discuss dates. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board has expressed its support for the event. It has also requested advice from the city council about the possibility of a designated events space being established in the domain. Rockabilly event organisers cannot commence with planning and marketing until a date is confirmed. RABBITS TO STAY Rabbits living on roundabouts in the red zone are able to stay. A New Zealand Transport Agency spokeswoman said the issue has ‘gone on the back-burner’ and nothing more will be happening this year. The rabbits occupy roundabouts on Anzac Drive, New Brighton and Travis Rds. There have been traffic safety concerns because of the distractions they were causing to motorists. There were also concerns about people crossing the road with children to get to the roundabouts. NZTA has said the rabbits might have to be culled or captured and released.

Christmas tips to keep your pets safe over the festive season ‘Tis the season to be jolly! In the spirit of the coming festive season the staff at McMaster and Heap Veterinary Practice wish to give you some helpful tips on how to keep your pets safe and happy over this busy time. Festive foods: Many festive foods can be harmful and toxic to cats & dogs – here are some of the major ones that pop up every year at Christmas time!
Grapes and Raisins - Some types of grapes and raisins have been shown to cause kidney failure in dogs when eaten in toxic quantities. So think before offering your pet some tasty Christmas cake or yummy ‘treats’ off the fruit platers. Onions - Pieces of raw onion, onion powder, or even cooked onion can cause damage to red blood cells, which could result in hemolytic anemia. Garlic - fresh and powdered forms of garlic are more potent than onions. These also cause damage to red blood cells. Cats are much more sensitive as they have more fragile red blood cells. Xylitol - Xylitol is a sugar alternative that is used in many commercial ‘sugar-free’ candies, gum, and other food items. Xylitol has been shown to cause severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and liver damage in dogs and can be fatal. Xylitol keeps popping up in unexpected places – the newest one is peanut butter, so be sure to read the label carefully. Macadamia Nuts - dangerous to dogs when eaten can result in weakness, depression, vomiting, incoordination, and tremors. In most cases, dogs developed clinical signs within the first twelve hours after eating the macadamia nuts. Chocolate - Contains Theobromine and caffeine which can cause increased heart rate, tremors, and excitation, depending on the type and the quantity ingested potentially death when ingested at a toxic dose. Other effects seen with chocolate overdose are vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, increased urination, and lethargy. Dark chocolate is the most serious as it contains the most theobromine, then milk chocolate, while white chocolate doesn’t contain any, but still not healthy for your dog to have.
Christmas Decorations Christmas decorations are not for pets to play with. • Keep your pet away from plants, many of which are poisonous, especially lilies which are extremely toxic for cats and results in acute kidney failure. • Keep electrical wires and batteries out of your pets reach. Chewing electrical cables can cause electric shock or burns to the mouth. • Be careful if you are using tinsel on your tree. If eaten, the tinsel can block your pets intestines – we saw several of these last Christmas!
Jo Hayes Don’t forget about your RABBITS Flystrike is a serious condition in rabbits. It occurs mostly in the summer months and we see a lot of cases over the holiday season as people get really busy and forget to regularly check on their pets. Flystrike is extremely distressing and it is also potentially fatal. It is caused by flies that are attracted to damp fur, urine, faeces and the odour of the rabbit’s scent. The flies will land on the rabbit normally around the rabbits rear end and lay their eggs. Within a very short time of 2 hours the eggs will hatch into maggots which start to feed on the rabbits skin. This process happens very quickly and is not always caught in time. Check your rabbit twice a day and if you find a maggot on your rabbit take it to us immediately.

Sculpture turns back to dust Community board requests urgent meeting on school sites with ministry
By Sophie Cornish A SELF-destructing sculpture represents the “fragility” of the eastern suburbs, according to its creator. New Brighton-based artist Melissa Macleod’s Salt of the Earth sculpture is made almost entirely of sand and has slowly collapsed. Located in the red zone on the corner of Linwood Ave and Woodham Rd, the temporary sculpture attempts to link east Christchurch to the central city. “I am interested in giving the east more of a voice. I like to do that by using materials that make you think of the east side of town. Sand is an obvious one,” said Macleod. It is a continuation of her other art works which engage the city’s coastal communities and the environmental and social challenges they face. In the past, Macleod has used sea water to create pieces and could possibly use coastal yellow daisies in future projects. The giant sand wedge mimicked a door stop when it was first built. “It’s a strong shape. The wedge is used a lot in sculptural practice. It’s quite significant in that it does prise things open,

and also as a door jam, it holds things open. I quite like its symbolism.” “The crucial point for me is that it is strong but it also dissolves, softens and weakens and that is essentially cutting to what the core of life is out this way (in the east).” Macleod was aware of the sculpture’s potential disintegration but “hoped that it would speak to the strength and fragility of a community that is both determined and trodden under foot”. “The ultimate aim was that it might stand as a strong looking form for maybe a day, but it
is sand and I asked it to do an incredible thing by being that big, but I think the hot days we had could’ve affected it. The ground is very solid and there is a lot of vibration in the ground from passing trucks.” She hopes the crumbling sculpture will challenge public perception. “It’s a real test of what public sculpture can be or what the public will cope with to some degree. It’s sort of like placing a broken thing in a public place and that might challenge some people. They might not see it as part of the work – they might see it as a problem.”

Year 10s get Enterprising Last week ninety Year 10 students worked hard for three days in the school gym to create business ideas. Two presenters from the Young Enterprise Trust came to the school to lead the students through the process of creating and developing businesses. On Wednesday, the students were put into groups of between five and ten students and given the challenge of creating a new business based on modern technology. By Friday, the students were ready to present their ideas and associated business plans to judges from the local business community.

Weight of gym phobia lifted
ADVERSITY: Libby Searle started her own home gym and fitness business and was named small group trainer of the year at the New Zealand Exercise Industry Awards.
By Sophie Cornish LIBBY SEARLE used to fear exercise and the gym as she struggled to overcome obesity, anorexia and binge eating. But now the fit and trim business owner runs her own home gym to help women build confidence and get over the fears she once had. The competitive bench-presser has just won a national exercise award for small group trainer of the year. The 26-year-old Avondale resident runs Libby Searle Fitness on Breezes Rd and is “changing women’s lives through weight training”. “I always thought that the gym was for fit people, so when that changed in my life, I wanted to help other women realise they could do that too. I wanted them to make that first step into the gym and that’s where my group classes, ladies lifting, was born.” The personal trainer opened her home gym in 2016 and now runs 13 ‘ladies’ lifting’ classes and four high-intensity circuit classes every week. “I love working from home and having my own studio. I think the girls like having that

privacy as well. We’ve got our own wee community going on,” said Miss Searle. Her journey to health started in 2011 when a flatmate suggested they run a half marathon. “At the age of 19, I was heading towards obesity, had lost all confidence, was getting sick all the time, and couldn’t even walk to the end of the street without getting puffed.” “We ran a lamp post, walked
a lamp post and we actually did it . . . and that was the turning point for me,” she said. Miss Searle started going to a gym following a hip injury which prevented her from running. She was thrilled to receive the award. “I was so surprised that I had won. I was really stoked actually, it was quite cool.” She hopes to own her own commercial, boutique-style gym in the future.

A SUPPORTIVE play group focused on children’s social development will be trialled in Aranui early next year. Te Whare Whanua, The Family House will aim to give children aged eight and under social opportunities to support their health and well-being. City East Charitable Trust received about $1700 from the Coastal-Burwood Community Board to start the project. Adults may also have access to parental learning programmes through the initiative which will be run in the Aranui/Wainoni Community Centre. There are currently no Ministry of Education-certified play groups in Aranui. The closest is Te Puna Oraka in Shirley and a Youth Alive, New Brighton. The Family House will have a lounge-like feel and provide play options for children such as board games, Lego, woodwork, music and possible outings each term. Services such as child and family counselling may also be added. It will initially operate one day a week and be managed by an experienced early childhood teacher.

A NEW community facilities booking service may help maximise the use of free spaces for groups in the city’s east. Local community groups have expressed an interest in managing the bookings done through the city council’s call centre. A community facility report for the Coastal-Burwood Community Board completed by an independent researcher found the booking system was not as effective as it could be. “Concerns were raised that bookings for the community centres are taken and managed by the city council call centre, and anyone can book the facility for any duration providing it is available. In practice, this means that for large chunks of time on a recurring basis, the facility is booked out by the same groups,
preventing access by other groups or local residents,” said researcher Sarah Wylie. She interviewed about 27 key stakeholders from suburbs in both wards. The co-ordinated approach will make it easier to match the multiple facilities to users’ needs. Residents from Aranui, North New Brighton, South Brighton, Queenspark and Parklands identified the change would be positive. The city council plans to conduct a trial with the Aranui Community Trust for the Aranui/Wainoni Community Centre. If successful, the Aranui Community Trust will also manage the bookings for St Ambrose church. The Bridge South Brighton Trust has also identified an interest in taking over bookings for the South Brighton Community Centre and South Brighton Surf Life Saving Club.

Pupils tested at police college SCHOOLS By Sophie Cornish FOUR MARSHLAND School pupils are on their way to being as fit as a police officer. The year 7 and 8 pupils gained the quickest time for intermediate students in the physical competency test at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Wellington. The annual event is run by Blue Light New Zealand with teams of intermediate-aged pupils participating in mental and physical challenges. The Marshland team finished third overall out of 20 teams in the two-day national competition. Marshland was one of two Christchurch schools selected from a city-wide competition run by Blue Light Canterbury to get an all-expenses paid trip to Wellington. St Patrick’s School, Bryndwr, was the other selected and the two teams trained and travelled together. Marshland teacher Paul Tyson
said the pupils are “really motivated kids.” “They came back buzzing . . . they were really wrapped to get the fastest time. Even though they came third overall, they were still really pleased with that result,” said Mr Tyson. One of the four pupils has already showed interest in joining the police force.

A FORMER Avonside Girls’ High student is making her mark internationally, taking part in the University Scholars Leadership Symposium in Thailand. Courtney Cray was one of more than 900 students from about 60 countries at the eighth symposium aimed at emerging leaders. The Parklands resident who is studying towards a Bachelor of Social Work degree is passionate about supporting families facing challenges and hopes her experience at the symposium will help. “Within New Zealand, and

globally, even beginning to comprehend the magnitude of the social injustices taking place can be overwhelming,” she said. Mrs Cray said a highlight of the symposium was visiting a village outside Bangkok where people are working to be fully self-sufficient. “During our time, we met with locals, and learnt firsthand about the Thai farmers’ lifestyle and how they worked collaboratively to be selfsufficient. The experience left me with a greater appreciation of the hard work that goes into
producing rice and admiration for the grassroots initiatives the community have in place.” The 27-year-old juggles study with part-time work and looking after her two-year-old daughter. Mrs Cray said it was a remarkable experience . “I look back to the beginning of the year and never saw myself doing this,” she said. “It was truly an amazing opportunity getting to meet with such a diverse group of people and learn how they were pursuing change in their communities. I came away feeling challenged and inspired.”

Prize winners 2017 The 2017 Dux of Marian College has been awarded to Jessie Fahey and Proxime Accessit to Rebecca Lake.
The full list of senior major prize recipients and photographs are now on the Marian College website. Marian College Principal Mary-Lou Davidson says as well as reflecting the opportunities students have in a wide range of areas of the school, awards are a reflection of hard work and dedication. “Congratulations to all the students who have been acknowledged,” Mrs Davidson says.
Ultimate St John Award
The programme is a partnership between Ngāi Tūāhuriri, Te Tapuae o Rehua and seven eastern Christchurch secondary schools and aims to ensure young Māori see themselves as leaders of the future. Participating student Rawinia Tahi (Ngāti Maniapoto) says she has learnt a lot.
‘Recognising my gifts and understanding how I can use them to help others, was the biggest realisation for me,’ Rawinia says.
Summer scarfie Year 11 Marian College student Keely Stuart (Te Aitanga-A-Mahaki) has received a Ngā Mahi-a-Ringa Pūtaiao Scholarship from Otago University. Keely will be participating in a week-long Hands-on at Otago programme during the summer holidays to experience being a science student on campus. Keely says she is very excited to be accepted onto the fully-funded programme. ‘I’m interested in a career in health, science and physiology so it will be a great opportunity to see what Otago University is like,’ she says.
The Grand Prior Award is the ultimate award, other than for bravery, for St John Cadets. Georgiana was one of 90 cadets - including former Marian student Steph Wessing (left) - from around New Zealand to receive the prestigious award.

‘I love learning new leadership skills and I’m really thankful I joined St John, as otherwise I wouldn’t have considered the Navy as a career path,’ she says.
The Zonta Awards are a celebration of the highest sports achievers - leaders in their sport locally and often competitors on the world stage.
Georgiana’s plans include a gap year, travel, and a career in the Navy as a medic.
This year, three Marian College students were finalists at the Zonta Sports Awards. Renee Rae won the top award for her contribution to netball umpiring. A judge said Renee follows a long tradition of Marian students who have won the award, and there was something very special about Marian College and its tradition of service.

From Year 11, students can choose to earn credits at Ara Institute of Canterbury, making the most of excellent facilities and teaching expertise – just across the road. Call to address maintenance issues at Donnell Park By Sophie Cornish “A LOT of maintenance” is needed in Burwood’s Donnell Park before it is considered a fully functioning community park again. Coastal-Burwood Ward city councillor David East (right) said with the east Burwood community growing, the park upkeep needs to be addressed. “Already when you drive down Travis Rd now you can see a number of new houses being built and
there will be a need for a community park.” City council head of parks Brent Smith said the playground is in good condition but the tennis court, basketball court, paths, drinking fountain and toilet block need repair or renewal work. “Staff will be scoping out the repairs over the coming weeks, identifying budget requirements and checking on the status of the infrastructure servicing the area. This includes
reinstating a linkage path across to Kingsbridge Drive from the playground,” said Mr Smith. Reinstating the sports field is not likely due to its low lying nature following the earthquakes. In the meantime, the mowing around the playground and the garden maintenance will be brought back up to the required standard. “It has potential, the infrastructure is all there, it just needs bit of TLC to bring it back to scratch,” said Cr East.

Fire warning as summer starts heating up early By Mark Thomas – fire risk management officer AS THE summer heats up, so does the number of calls our troops are attending. It’s normal to have about 100 calls in a week. Weather events, of course, add to the number. So the 169 incidents attended last week can at least in part be attributed to the weather, or the heat, to be more precise. A large number of false alarms, presumably from fire detection systems drooping and a large number of ambulance assists including, unfortunately, several sudden deaths,
added to the list. Also we attended far too many grass and skip or bin fires. While a few of these are the result of accidents most of them were lit deliberately. Whether it be kids playing or malicious firestarters, the dry conditions make all of these potentially serious. The Governors Bay crew were called to the local hotel on December 2 to what turned out to be a patron puffing on a vaping cigarette. It’s a first for me to see this but hardly surprising. I followed a car the other
day with two people both vaping and both front windows open. The clouds of vapour they were seemingly choreographing erupted from both sides of the car like whistles from a steam train. I guess it’s better for them than the alternative! Sprinklers in buildings are expensive. But one operating in Pak’nSave in the Hornby Hub on December 3 stopped a fire from a bakers oven in its tracks. The mall re-opened quickly. That’s why we love sprinkler systems.

Run a knife around the shank end of the ham. Carefully slice under the edge of the rind at the base of the ham. Use your fingers to ease between the rind and the fat. Pull to gently remove the rind. With a sharp knife, score
the fat with 3mm-deep cuts in a diamond pattern. Place ham in a foil-lined oven pan large enough to catch any glaze that drips as it cooks. Surround ham with one cup cold water. Drain pineapple and combine with glaze ingredients in a bowl. Smear glaze over scored fat of ham. Bake ham for 40-45min, basting at regular intervals until the glaze has caramelised to a golden brown. Rest the baked ham for at least 15min before carving. Sliced ham can either be served hot or at room temperature. ROSE PETAL MERINGUE WITH SUMMER BERRIES AND STRAWBERRY SAUCE Ingredients

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C and line a flat baking sheet with non-stick baking paper. Using an electric beater, whip the egg whites until firm, then whisk in the sugar. Fold in the cornflour and rose petals and place large spoonfuls of the mixture onto the baking sheet. Bake for 4045min.
